Practical Skills in Bobbin Lace
Published in Hardcover by Chrysalis Books (31 December, 1990)
Author: Bridget M. Cook
Average review score:

A must-have for all bobbin lacers
This is my personal lacemaking bible. Especially helpful for those who have little or no access to other lacemakers, it is chock-full of diagrams showing virtually every technique imaginable. There are no patterns in this book; it is purely technique. Still, without it I would have lost my mind on several occasions. If you are learning bobbin lace, this book is one of the best buys you could possibly make.

A definite must for bobbin lace makers
Bridget Cook's Practical Skills (the Cook Book among fans) is a definite must for lacemakers. This is not a pattern book, nor a beginner book. It is the ultimate companion for bobbin lace makers, providing answers to almost every technical problem that arises when making bobbin lace. More often than not Cook provides several solutions to a problem, so you can choose the solution that suits your lace best. This book has saved my lace (and my sanity) several times and I heartily recommend it.

Prairie Cooks: Glorified Rice, Three-Day Buns, and Other Recipes and Reminiscences
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (May, 1997)
Authors: Carrie Young and Felicia Young

Like Grandma used to cook everyday!
This is a great book for Scandinavian recipes used EVERYDAY in America. There are tons of cookbooks for those special occasions, but the recipes which are hard to find are the ones that grandma didn't write down; she used them everyday; no need to refer to a recipe card! I found SIMPLE recipes that were used when the goal was to just feed the family, not to "entertain." But these are GOOD recipes, quite literally, like "Grandma used to make." If you're looking for a recipe that isn't fancy, but a family favorite, this is the place to find it!

A Wonderful Book for Scandinavian-Americans ! ! !
You won't be sorry you picked up this book. I've read two other books by Carrie Young, and they are all just a treat to read. I grew up eating this kind of food, lovingly cooked by my Norwegian grandmother. I thoroughly enjoyed reading these recipes and accompanying stories. The stories are often hilarious, and they all ring true for those of us with similar backgrounds. I'm picking up another copy of this book as a birthday gift for a relative, I know she'll love it!!! A great book for Scandinavians, for persons from the midwest, or for anyone else!!!

Quasi-Experimentation: Design and Analysis Issues
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (July, 1979)
Authors: Thomas D. Cook, Donald T. Campbell, and Thomas H. Cook
Average review score:

Field Researchers' Bible
This is a "must-have" book for anyone engaged in field research or a student of field research methods. The approach is to maximize validity of research findings based on a number of considerations in the design of field research. Examines the pit-falls made by most new and inexperienced field researchers and evaluators. Before you conduct your next program evaluation, design an applied research study, or start to collect dissertation data, read this book!

Essential for Evaluation Research
"Quasi-Experimentation" carries on the work begun by Campbell and Stanley in "Experimental and Quasi-Experimental Designs for Research." Beginning with a discussion of the positivist origins of science and evaluation research, it details a range of quasi-experimental approaches suitable to "real world" research, together with statistical techniques applicable to each. The book includes a realistic assessment of the barriers to randomization in natural settings, including the observation that true randomization is rarely used unless there is a marked power differential between the researcher and the subjects. The book is thoughtful, well-written, and invaluable.

Quilt With the Best

Quilt with the best
I have had this book for 4 years. I never tire of looking at it. It gives a general view of how to. Great for being inspired. At the time I bought this book I was interested in fabric dying. Jan Myers-Newbury gives wonderful description on how to dye fabric in gradations of colors. Ami Simms section on "Improving Your Quilting Stitch", has good ideas. Marta Amundson's work is exciting. She quilts nature and animal motifs in the background of her quilts. These three artists interest me, but that is where my interests lie. Many artists give advice on what they do from log cabin, sweatshirt seminole design, applique, quilt collecting, quilt grids. I love it. Great for quilting library collection.

Quilt With the Best
It is rare that I find a Quilting book that is really worth purchasing for my collection. This one is exceptional with fantastic design ideas - very creative. There are so many ideas I would like to try myself.

The Quotable Cook

Quotalicious Feast
Everyone who loves to cook or just loves to eat should own at least two copies of Quotable Cook.....only because, someone is bound to steal your copy when you are not looking or are in the kitchen, cooking. It is the best culinary read I have had in a long time! Not since I read Kitchen, have I enjoyed a book quite so much.

When your own copy arrives (Yes, we saw you drooling over that copy in the bookstore!), you will want to hide it so you can have it all to yourself for at least an hour. When my husband fell asleep on the couch (after eating dinner), I snuck away to the bedroom to lounge all snuggled up under the down comforter. Finally, I had an hour all to myself...just me and a sumptuous collection of decadent tidbits.

Upon opening the first page, I realized the quotes were organized in a pleasing fashion. An Invitation to Dine, The Guest List, The Menu, Food, Wisdom and Politics were served up in a very appetizing way. The real secret is that you are about to dine on words, words and more words. Each dripping with wit and creativity. Some are so amusing, you might catch yourself laughing out loud. Rodney Dangerfield's quote is just about the funniest quote I have ever read.

I had to do a double take on something Julia Child said, and when I read "Many's the long night I've dreamed of cheese-toasted mostly. -Robert Louis Stevenson...I started to get a bit hungry and honestly thought about making a grilled cheese sandwich. Some quotes started to make me a bit nostalgic and others made me contemplate life and how food centers us, comforts us or may even enlighten us. It is amazing how a quote about food can sometimes shed light on other areas of life to the extent of making you start collecting these quotes religiously! I did find quite a few quotes I had already discovered, but never have found them all in one book!

The quaint size of this volume is similar to your favorite novel. It is also as intriguing and once I started to read one quote, I was baited into reading another and another, until I finally had read the last quote and had to climb back out of bed to write this review. I would have happily stayed in bed if I had magically found a second volume.

My first review hardly did this book justice and since I had only read a few cooking quotes, how was I to know the depths of this book?

I do have to disagree with Moliere though, who said: "I live on good soup, not on fine words." To that I say...more words please! I agreed with everything Emeril Lagasse says and loved finding quotes by Oscar Wilde, William Shakespeare, Henry David Thoreau, Adelle Davis, Lord Byron, Saki, Confucius and Mark Twain.

If you have an hour, these quotes you will devour! The Quotable Cook is the most digestible serving of quotes ever published. When do we have the pleasure of dining on a second book? I am already starving!

Here is one quote I would love to see in the second book:

People give food meaning. It's easy to trivialize, because food is everywhere. But love of food is love of life. 'Barbara Haber, the curator of books at the Radcliffe Institute's Schlesinger Library. They house one of the largest culinary collections.

For cooks who are quote lovers!
If you want to find out what everyone is saying...from world leaders to comedians and everyone in-between, you will want to mentally devour all these delicous food quotes.

The perfect gift for the cook in your life! Here are two of my own favorite food quotes.

There is no love sincerer than the love of food. -George Bernard Shaw

I have noticed that when chickens quit quarreling over their food they often find that there is enough for all of them  I wonder if it might not be the same with the human race. -Donald Robert Perry Marquis, American Journalist

Enjoy the feast!

R.G.S. Story: Dolores & McPhee
Published in Hardcover by Sundance Pubns Ltd (September, 1998)
Authors: Dell A. McCoy, W. George Cook, and Russ Collman

Another exceptional entry in the RGS Story series
As is true for all volumes in the RGS Story series, this book is exceptional. It's a study of the Rio Grande Southern railroad, specifically the portion of the railroad between the towns of Ophir and Rico.

The incredible Ophir loop area is covered in Vol 3, while vol 5 covers Rico itself and the mines above it. This volume covers the trackage and small stations between, including Trout Lake and the 10,250' Lizard Head pass.

A must for any RGS fan, or anyone interested in the history of this part of the country during the 1890s - 1950s. As with every book in the series, this one includes many hundreds of photos, historical accounts, track plans, building and bridge drawings, and much more.

An incredibly thorough exploration of this portion of the RG
As is true for all volumes in the RGS Story series, this book is exceptional. It's a study of the Rio Grande Southern railroad, specifically the portion of the railroad around the towns of Dolores and McPhee (both in southerwestern Colorado, near Durango). There are many hundreds photos and pages of historical accounts not only of the railroad's operations in these towns, but also of the towns themselves. A must for any RGS fan, or anyone interested in the history of this part of the country during the 1890s - 1950s.
